Overview

The Annapurna Region is widely celebrated as one of Nepal’s top trekking destinations, offering a variety of experiences for adventurers. Among its many trails, the Annapurna Circuit stands out as a popular choice. This trek reaches its highest point at the Thorong La Pass, situated at an altitude of 5,416 meters, just brushing the edge of the Tibetan Plateau. Depending on the mode of transportation used, the total distance of the circuit ranges from approximately 160 to 230 kilometers. Typically, the journey begins in Besisahar, Lamjung, and concludes at Nayapul near Pokhara. Most trekkers choose the anticlockwise route due to its gradual altitude gain, making the Thorong La Pass crossing safer and more manageable, though the direction can be adjusted based on individual preferences.

The trek offers a complete circuit around the Annapurna Massif, including a passage through the world’s deepest gorge carved by the Kali Gandaki River. Along the way, trekkers are rewarded with views of numerous towering peaks ranging from 6,000 to 8,000 meters. Notable mountains include Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhre, Manaslu, Tilicho Peak, and the Pisang peaks. Following the trail alongside the Marshyangdi River, you’ll encounter breathtaking vistas of Manaslu and Himal Chuli. Culturally rich encounters await as well, with the warm hospitality of Gurung and Ghale communities enhancing the experience. As the path moves northward, the barren landscapes of the Tibetan Plateau and the snow-covered Himalayan range come into view.

Opened to foreign trekkers in 1977, the Annapurna Circuit's most demanding section is the ascent to Thorong La Pass. Reaching the summit rewards hikers with stunning panoramic views, followed by a descent toward the sacred temples of Muktinath. The journey also leads to the well-known town of Jomsom, a favorite resting stop for trekkers, offering comfortable accommodations. Other remarkable places like Jomsom and Lete further enrich this unforgettable adventure.
